Matt (AU!)-Death Note

History:

If you were ever to ask young Mail what he can remember of his past it wouldn’t be the family that were nothing more than hazy shadows that would haunt his dreams, nor the hardship that lead to losing that once happy life. It would be memories of the ‘pound’, the child puppy factory that forced him into so called happy homes he had no interest in and apparently who returned the sentiment. He would always find himself back in the office with voices spouting ‘Brat’, ’doesn’t care’ ‘to quiet’ or ‘you have to pay for the TV that he destroyed!’ To be truthful he had given up on anyone ever giving him a home and found solace in taking things apart and putting them back together better than they ever were. The world was boring to him but he found happiness in finding just how things worked. This had not escaped the warden who on finding young Mail in the process of disembodying the orphanages’ computer system dragged him straight to his office. Surprisingly he wasn’t greeted with the telling off he was expecting but a warm welcome by a soft spoken gentleman who began to ask him many questions which confused the young boy. Was he getting a new home? What did this guy want from him? It was hours later and with a soft nod at the pound’s staff that he took Mail’s hand and led him to a new life.

His arrival at Wammy’s was a confusing affair, as it was not what he was expecting, nor did he expect to get a new name ‘Matt’. Even more surprising was that the children there were all insanely intelligent and his habit of looking at how things worked was encouraged. He found out pretty quick that they were there to take the position of the greatest detective of that century, L . Should he fall they were to be his replacements. He began to admire what the man did but honestly detective work didn’t interest him and despite being in the top 3 in the whole place he would sometimes get too lazy in the boring studies he needed to do and drop grades.

He was still quite and would sit in any corner in the huge house completely absorbed in his game boy. For some reason or another he caught the eye of the most raucous boy in the whole place, Mello. He firmly took Matt under his wing and under Mello’s friendship Matt began to come out of his shell more, quietness being taken over by a teasing sense of humour and even telling Mello off for some of his more vicious tricks. Usually Mello’s tricks were aimed at a quiet white clad boy called Near; Matt had no argument with the boy and in fact would sometimes sit peacefully in the hallways absorbed in his game while Near played nearby. But for some reason he rubbed Mello the wrong way. Was it his position as top student or something else? He’d question the fact Mello treated his rival with a tone of voice and body language that he’d never seen him wear but chose to keep quiet; he had enough ‘accidental’ bruises from the blonde thank you very much.

It wasn’t till one fateful day when Mello rushed past him in a ball of anger and venom. He found out L had lost to Kira and Near had ‘won’. Watching his best friend packing his bag Matt made the decision to go with him, imagining Mello out there alone on the streets was more than enough to make him shove all his belongings into a bag and walk through those gates alongside him. They spent some months bumming around London trying to get together as much information as they could on Kira, when Mello said he had come up with a plan to get at Kira more easily. As much as Matt tried he just wouldn’t tell him the details apart from they had to make a trip ‘to make friends and influence people’. He saw it as another Mello recipe for disaster but like a trusting fool he agreed. Mello was damned lucky to have Matt by his side as they got enough money together to make a tip to American with Matt’s hacking skills and a few unfortunate bank accounts.

It was in their time on the streets he took to smoking, Mello was a good friend but the stress of helping him got to Matt and his addictions allowed him some escape from life.

In America he was pretty much left to his own devices while Mello was out arranging the pieces of ‘his cunning plan’ He didn’t mind and what better place to just take it easy with his games, computers buzzing him news on how the Kira case was coming along. Days turned to weeks of Mello coming and going and never once telling him what he was up to. The only interest he showed was on Matt’s run down on the daily happenings of the cult of Kira. It was on a day that even Matt was bored with the game he had been getting his arse kicked on that Mello came bursting through the door telling him to follow, no questions. Again like a puppy he did as he was told.

It was following Mello through a large ornate mansion with guys packing heat at their back he realised he hadn’t had time to plan anything, no time to calculate what was happening when Mello pulled a head from his bag.

He really hadn’t equated for Mello’s insanity in the whole affair at all.

Or rather Mello hadn’t added up just how much the brothers of the mobster he had killed wanted him dead, dead enough to infiltrate their enemy’s territory and let lose in a rain of bullets. Mello went down fast and there was blood everywhere, Matt felt lightening and fire run through his leg but didn’t care he fell down against Mello screaming his name, a bloody hand grabbed his top and a promise was told, one that in tears Matt swore to stick to before the grip dies and Mello to is lost to blackness.

GAME OVER

Or not quite.

Waking up to blazing hospital lights and an agonising pain in his left leg, he realises he’s not quite alone. His drug fogged brain registers the cops standing by his bedside, and instantly the questions to the Mafia massacre begin. Matt doesn’t give them any answers until he knows Mello is alright, until he sees him.

“Mello is dead.” he’s coldly told.

Game over... for real, after that crushing news he shuts down, refuses to answer any questions and in depression chooses to sleep it off wishing he’d never opened his eyes. Even through more questions he keeps them shut, through the pain of physiotherapy to get his shattered bone and muscle working again he keeps them shut, when he’s told his leg would heal but there could be complications if he strains it too much he keeps them shut. It’s a good while before finally he reluctantly ‘wakes up’. It’s not the cops that are by his side but Roger from Wammys house. He knew then the world truly was screwed if he was that easy to trace. Roger bluntly gives him a choice, come back with him to Wammy’s or be left to the cops. Of course he chooses Wammy’s. He finds himself back in England standing in the very same office that the world went to hell in, he has pins in his leg, an ache in his chest and an uncertain future ahead of him. Roger chooses then to tell him why he used every connection he could to get him out of the hospital and the cop’s grubby paws. He wants him to help Near, to go undercover as an informant and use his skills to get the information that no one else can. Only stipulation is Near is not to know who he is.

Feeling defeat on all sides he takes up residency in the orphanages attic, surrounded by computers and TV equipment he soon begins to absorb information on Kira and surprisingly by luck finds Near at the centre of the SNK building siege. He contacts him before they evacuate the building signing himself off with only an ‘M’ knowing full well Near would suspect it was Mello over him, successfully Near eventually contacts Matt again a few days later. Near is untrusting at first but when he feeds him things only Mello knows (who told Matt in strictest confidence) that coldness begins to thaw and they start to work together. He begins feeding Near what information he can collect and his opinion on such matters and Near swaps what he has too and tells him to come to Japan.

Matt soon finds himself in Japan and settling himself in with the local otaku clan and some expert hackers he contacts Near again, telling him he would work with him but they could not meet – he felt bad enough for pretending to be a boy long dead. They plan together the meeting in the yellow box, Near is to do the actual meeting but ‘M’ is to be the backup in case it goes horribly wrong. Taking a leaf out of his best friends (insanity) book Matt sets the whole building with explosives and cameras and hoping for Nears sake it would go according to plan. But just in case no one was getting out, Matt had more than enough of seeing death.

Though he would never know if it had succeeded, for one moment he was watching proceedings, finger poised on the trigger, the next he was god knows where.

Personality:

Initially on first meeting him Matt appears to be a quiet kind of boy or maybe that’s just his seemingly lazy attitude to life showing. He’s a quite laid back, fun loving guy. A complete prankster if the mood suits him, and people often find themselves on the wrong end of his sarcastic (‘cheeky’ in his words) sense of humour. Never more happier when kicking back relaxing with a favourite game or gleefully hacking the finer points of another’s life, as much as he enjoys the company of others he likes his alone time. One could say he’s a nosey person and always keeps track of people’s comings and goings, most are safe though as he usually can’t be bothered to share what he knows. Just don’t take his fags away from him and he’ll be a generally all round decent bloke.

That’s not to say he has no dark skeletons in his closest, he has them in droves. Because of the harshness of his past and having followed some into hell itself (again his words) He will not take any shit from people and will definitely tell you if he thinks you’re being an idiot. He’s also prone to gloomy moods now and again, maybe due to the pain his once bullet riddled leg gives him or maybe it’s the nightmares full of blood and death? He won’t tell you, just take solace in his addictions and pout.

Being a genius, though a damn lazy one he has a great affinity for technology, be it taking apart things to find out how they work, hacking, codes and data. One could simply say he is at heart a complete nerd (he’d argue geek as nerds are tre uncool)
